Audi AG is a German luxury automobile manufacturer headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, Audi produces cars in nine plants around the world.
The company’s origins are complex, dating back to the early 20th century and the initial businesses (Horch and Audiwerke ) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the founding of Auto Union in 1932. The modern era of Audi began in the 1960s when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz. After relaunching the Audi brand in 1965 with the introduction of the Audi F103 series, Volkswagen merged Auto Union with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969, thus creating the modern form of the company.
The company name is based on the Latin translation of the surname of the founder, August Horch. Horch , meaning “to listen”, becomes audi in Latin. Each of the four rings of the Audi logo symbolizes one of the four automobile companies that merged to create Audi’s predecessor company, Auto Union. Audi’s slogan is Vorsprung durch Technik , translated as “Progress through technology.” Audi, together with the German brands BMW and Mercedes-Benz, is one of the best-selling luxury car brands in the world.
